Correspondence Architecture

Correspondence Architecture is a representation-centric organizational architecture for preserving the meaningful relationships through which an organization knows what it intends, decides, does, observes, learns, and adapts. It is not a software architecture, data architecture, graph architecture, enterprise notation, or AI governance framework, although it can inform each of those runtime projections.

The conceptual model has four construct roles: foundational constructs, core architectural constructs, preservation mechanisms, and emergent outcomes. Foundational constructs define what must be preserved. Core architectural constructs define the unit of analysis and organizing form. Preservation mechanisms explain how correspondence is established, maintained, assessed, and restored. Emergent outcomes describe conditions that arise when the architecture functions well over time.

The hierarchy is important because not every term is equally central. Intent, Representation, Correspondence, Canonical Organizational Object, and Representation Network are indispensable to the theory. Governance, memory, assessment, learning, and AI participation explain mechanisms. Resilience, adaptation, and Cognitive Integrity describe expected consequences or conditions, not additional architectural primitives.

4.1 Foundational Constructs

The foundational constructs are Intent, Canonical Organizational Object, Representation, Representation Network, and Correspondence. Intent is a represented orientation of organizational purpose, direction, desired condition, or commitment. Canonical Organizational Objects are stable semantic objects through which organizational meaning is represented and related. Representations are the persistent artifacts, statements, models, memories, outputs, or structured expressions through which organizational cognition becomes available. Representation Networks are the evolving networks of representations and their relationships. Correspondence is the preserved meaningful relationship among organizational representations over time.

4.2 Core Architectural Constructs

The core architectural constructs are Canonical Organizational Object, Representation Network, and Correspondence Architecture itself. These constructs define how represented meaning has stable identity, how representations relate, and how correspondence becomes an architectural obligation rather than an accidental property of documentation.

4.3 Preservation Mechanisms

The preservation mechanisms are Transformation, Decision, Work, Evidence, Outcome, Governance, Organizational Memory, Assessment, Learning, Capability, and Bounded AI Participation. These mechanisms explain how organizations convert intent into action, action into evidence, evidence into evaluation, evaluation into learning, and learning into adaptation. They also explain where correspondence can fail.

4.4 Runtime Constructs

The runtime constructs are Organizational Runtime, Cognitive Runtime, and AI Participant. Organizational Runtime refers to the social, technical, procedural, and institutional arrangements through which the organization creates, transforms, relates, evaluates, and governs representations. Cognitive Runtime refers to the subset concerned with interpretation, reasoning, memory, assessment, learning, and AI-mediated cognition. AI Participant refers to an AI system that creates, transforms, summarizes, relates, recommends, retrieves, or evaluates representations within bounded governance.

These terms do not refer to software runtimes. They describe sociotechnical enactment. People, routines, policies, artifacts, AI systems, and governance practices participate in the runtime because they shape how representations are interpreted and transformed. Software may support this enactment, but it does not own organizational meaning.

4.5 Emergent Outcomes

The emergent outcomes are Cognitive Integrity, Organizational Adaptation, and Architectural Coherence. Cognitive Integrity is the dynamic condition associated with sustained Organizational Correspondence. Organizational Adaptation is the ability to revise representations, capabilities, governance, and actions while preserving identity and correspondence. Architectural Coherence is the condition in which layers, objects, relationships, and transformations remain mutually intelligible.
