Preservation Mechanisms and Failure Modes
Cognitive Integrity is sustained through preservation mechanisms that maintain the conditions under which Organizational Correspondence can persist.
Correspondence Preservation maintains meaningful semantic and causal relationships among organizational representations. Cognitive Synchronization supports mutually coherent interpretation across human and AI actors. Decision Provenance preserves traceability among intent, evidence, assumptions, decisions, authority, execution, outcomes, and learning (Cleland-Huang et al., 2012; Ross et al., 2006). Intent Verification assesses whether decisions, AI outputs, and execution remain coherent with represented intent. Representation Validation evaluates whether representations are accurate, current, contextualized, and properly related. Memory Maintenance preserves the accuracy, relevance, and relational coherence of organizational memory.
These mechanisms are active but not identical to Cognitive Integrity. They preserve the conditions from which Cognitive Integrity emerges.
Integrity failure occurs when representations, relationships, intent, memory, decisions, or actor interpretations lose correspondence. Intent Drift occurs when decisions, execution, or AI-generated outputs become disconnected from represented intent. Representation Drift occurs when artifacts become outdated, contradictory, duplicated, or poorly connected. Decision Inconsistency occurs when decisions conflict or cannot be traced to evidence, authority, or intent. Memory Fragmentation occurs when organizational memory becomes disconnected, obsolete, inaccessible, or contradictory. Human-AI Divergence occurs when human and AI actors interpret representations differently without reconciliation. Agent-to-Agent Divergence occurs when multiple AI agents produce incompatible recommendations or actions. Governance Opacity occurs when authority, accountability, or rationale cannot be traced. Cognitive Debt accumulates when unresolved inconsistencies remain in the representation network.
Failure modes are analytically useful because they identify how Cognitive Integrity may degrade without requiring a claim that the whole organization has failed. They also connect the theory to future diagnosis and measurement.
