Research Motivation and Gap
The motivation for the paper is the growing mismatch between established organizational knowledge practices and AI-native operation. Organizations have long used documents, repositories, enterprise systems, routines, and governance processes to preserve memory and coordinate action. These practices were already imperfect: records became stale, decision rationales were lost, evidence was detached from claims, and groups interpreted the same representation differently.
AI-native operation makes these weaknesses more consequential. The same source material can be transformed into executive summaries, role-specific views, AI-generated recommendations, board briefings, work plans, and risk explanations. Such projection is valuable only when the organization can preserve source, scope, authority, freshness, confidence, contestability, and correspondence with source knowledge.
The research gap is structural rather than terminological. The claim is not that prior scholarship lacks the phrase Organizational Knowledge Kernel. The claim is that current theory lacks a coherent construct for the governed organizational knowledge runtime that preserves correspondence among intent, representations, projections, authority, memory, state, execution, evidence, outcomes, learning, adaptation, and AI participation. Table 1 defines the core constructs used throughout the paper. Table 2 summarizes adjacent constructs and the additional explanatory work required of OKK.
